From heirloom quality, hand-carved wood to what has defined Aidan Gray since the company was launched 12 years ago, lighting plays a significant role in this distinctive presentation that represents founder and lead designer Randal Weeks’ love for interiors, design, and authentic products that exude “European grandeur.” Based in McKinney, TX, Aidan Gray also encompasses the categories of candle, décor, furniture and garden, with a total offering that numbers more than 900 SKUs. Here, Weeks offers a closer look at his ever-expanding lighting line, and company that has made its mark with exceptional quality, detail-oriented design and firm commitment to customer service.
Q: What distinguishes the Aidan Gray presentation?
A: “It’s definitely all about the details – how we finish out the look and design of every piece we create. Quality hardware is used throughout, down to the sockets and the cords. If one of the lamps features a crystal base, you can be guaranteed that it’s actual crystal and not acrylic.
This attention to detail extends to all aspects of our design. We spend a great deal of time working with our factories to achieve our signature distressed finishing techniques, as well as our gold leafing applications. I have always been mesmerized by the hand carving that makes each lamp slightly different. I love the fact that Aidan Gray is creating products that possess a heirloom quality; pieces that will enrich homes for years to come.”
Q: How do you define your design philosophy?
A: “My goal is for every Aidan Gray piece to be able to stand alone. Since each product already contains a wealth of unique features, it’s our position that you don’t even need a lot of color in a room to make a statement. The product speaks for itself and radiates its design own story.”
Q: How has the line evolved through the years?
A: “Like many, at this point in my life I’m looking for less clutter and more simplicity; my products have begun to reflect this trend as well. Using myself as a benchmark, I am now creating more of what I call ‘Aidan Gray with an edge.’ This means we are developing lamps with cleaner silhouettes, but still featuring our trademark multi-layer finishes and all the details we love to put into each piece. On the whole, it’s a cleaner, more transitional approach, though still with a European feel. For the summer markets, we will also be introducing color options in lighting for the first time.”
Q: That’s a perfect lead-in to the AG Hom collection. What have you tried to do with this line?
A: “AG Hom is a nod to the retro movement –celebrating design that embodies a sleeker and more modern feel. Ironically the whole concept came about while on vacation with my family, when myself and my then-14-year-old son started discussing the finer points of geometry! This sparked my interest in form and shape. The result is a full range of product, including lighting, which allows us to create more contemporary, geometric pieces that would not typically fit into our collection. The line is three years old, and I’m proud to say it has sold extremely well.
Q: What’s your message to potential customers?
A: “We have never wavered from our tag line ‘Our Details, Your Styles.’ Our goal is to put as much detail into the pieces as we can and allow our customers to go forward with how they envision the products fitting into their homes. I’m always amazed to see how customers use our products and the settings they use them. Every product that we incorporate into the line is designed by us, with a point of view in mind that enables the customer to move forward with their own unique design initiative. At Aidan Gray, every day we’re driven by what our clients need and what they are telling us they want. It’s been a solid formula for success.”
